Students Lobby for New Technology for Off-Campus Students

Silver City, NM– This past Wednesday, the Associated Students of Western New Mexico University, represented by AsiaMarie Garcia, Claudia Osuna and Dylan Kester, pleaded their case to the Grant County Prospectors, asking for money to provide visualized applications for the students of WNMU.

Throughout the campus, departments such as Art and Geology use specific programs that can only be reached through the computer labs located on campus. This means that students off campus, such as online or extended university students, fall short or cannot complete assignments.

For example, in the Art Department photo-shopping is an expensive activity and students who do not have direct accessibility to the campus and it’s resources cannot participate in this. Another example would be the newly introduced GIS program (Geographic Information System) from the Geology Department. Not only are off-campus students are in need of visualized applications, but students athletes also, since they travel a considerable amount of time from campus.

The amount needed to complete this task would be $250,000. If granted this money, 120 application would be available for students and would extend to the extended university branches as well.
