Silver City, NM – Joseph Kerski, Education Manager for the Environmental Systems Research Institute, or ESRI, stopped by Western New Mexico University last Thursday to present ArcGIS (geographic information systems) to students.
ArcGIS is a data, mapping spreadsheet that crosses throughout the United States. If one was looking to go into any type of business or economic career, ArcGIS is the answer. It provides patterns, variables, and “precise analysis” of such things as race, gender, age, interest and much more which is a must for being successful in the business world. For example: if a company was to sell skateboards and wanted to look at the demographics of age, then the ArcGIS map will provide what ages live where in the United States.
Joseph Kerski says this system is for “efficient decision making” in business. With over 350,000 organizations using ArcGIS, these statistics are provides by the U.S. Census Bureau and surveys. ArcGis is available for free online at www.arcgis.com, but for more advanced features, paying is authorized.
ESRI is the company that runs ArcGIS and has been known for more than 40 years. The headquarters are located in Redlands, California, and was founded by Jack Dangermond and his wife Laura. ESRI’s mission was “to help land planners and land resource managers make well-informed environmental decisions by organizing and analyzing geographic information.”
WNMU is offering a class on ArcGIS next semester called Intro to GIS 361/363 and will be offered on a semester-basis.
