Silver City, NM- On August 28, 1963, American minister and activist, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic “I Have A Dream” speech to a massive crowd of civil rights marchers. His speech, among several statements, sent out of a powerful message of unity, and expressing that unity is the Office of Student Life and the Art Club’s goal in a new collaborative project celebrating Black History Month.
The project centers around an illustration of Dr. King, created from plywood, gesso, and acrylic paint donated by the Office of Student Life, that is meant to be passed around Grant County elementary schools every week until MLK day. The image is divided into smaller sections in order for students to contribute to each individual piece.
“It’s important for young kids to know the history of the country and to know who fought for it to be how it is now,” said Art Club president Sierra Robinson. “The idea behind this project is to get kids to work together and create something, just like social rights activists worked together to create a more humane country.”
The completed project will be unveiled at WNMU’s Martin Luther King Jr. day event on January 15, 2018 and will then find a permanent installment on campus.
