WNMU Softball Finishes Tournament With 4-3 Loss

Las Vegas, NV- This past weekend, Western New Mexico University softball was in Las Vegas for the Desert Stinger tournament, winning two and losing three (2-3). One of which was on Sunday’s final game of the tournament. It came down to a nail bitter where Concordia University Irvine (CUI) was able to inch their way past in the sixth inning taking the win over Western New Mexico University, 4-3.

Pitching for the Mustangs, was Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) who struck out the first Eagles batter in the first inning. But CUI bounced back with a hit to third and advanced to second base on an error. The runner stole third and a Mustang error allowed the first score of the game, 1-0.

In the second, WNMU answered back with their own run when Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) singled to center field and brought in Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad). Momentum kept going for the Mustangs thanks to an Alicia Enriquez (Gilbert, AZ/Mesquite) shot to left center which brought in Gastelum and made a Mustang lead, 2-1.

Concordia would not go away as they came through with a run to tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning.

Mustangs in the fourth regained the lead when Clarissa Moreno (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) was hit by a pitch and not to soon later would score when Gastelum drilled a shot to left field, taking the lead 3-2.

Again, the Eagles tied the game back up 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth.

With a scoreless fifth and sixth for WNMU, CUI in the bottom sixth put runners on first and second base on an error and a walk. Not too soon, a runner was batted in on a right field hit and the Eagles took the lead back, 4-3.

Mustangs could not answer back in the seventh inning as Concordia would go on to take the win, 4-3.

Overall the Eagles came away with five hits and two errors, while the Mustangs brought in four hits with three errors.

Pitching all six innings for WNMU was Shomi (1-4). She only allowed three earned runs and was accountable for four strikeouts.

Western New Mexico University softball is 3-7 and will be back on the road again this weekend as they travel to Utah for the Dixie State tournament.
