Silver City, NM- Suzanne Donazetti was the latest artist to come to WNMU as a part of the Edwina and Charles Milner Women in the Arts lecture series. The 72-year old artist currently resides in Carrizozo, NM, but her mixed media works are featured in the Waxlander Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. A petite woman with a quiet voice, one would never guess that she works daily with huge sheets of copper, but she has been for about three decades now.
Donazetti’s pieces are intricately weaved with the addition of curvatures that lend a beautiful and alternative type of aesthetic to the viewer’s eye. She has been perfecting her craft for almost 30 years, and has no plans to stop anytime soon. Donazetti claims that she has, “been obsessed for this long,” and the dedication shows, as Donazetti’s works are truly one of a kind.
Donazetti has a unique artistic styling of copper with metallic leafing placed on top in order for the paint to show. She mentioned that her style has always been inspired by patterns, with one of her favorite artists being Australian painter Gustav Klimt. Donazetti’s most elaborate pieces are the diptychs and triptychs that she creates with a centerpiece focus, and are separated into two or three slabs vertically.
The next artist in the lecture series will be Joy Harjo on the 2nd of March.
