Newsome Named RMAC Defensive Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior point guard RaTanya Newsome (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) collected Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors as announced by the conference office Monday.

Newsome led WNMU with seven steals with a high of five against the Skyhawks. She also brought down six rebounds, dished out a team-high 14 assists and chipped in 17 points, with a high of nine in the win against Adams State. She just missed a double-double in that game with eight assists.

Following this weekend, Newsome is now first in the RMAC in both assists per game (5.9) and steals per game (2.5). In addition she is seventh in the RMAC in three other categories including three-point percentage (41.1), assist-to-turnover (1.4) and minutes played (32.4).

WNMU, currently tied with MSU Denver for eighth in the RMAC, will remain home this week as they will host Western State Colorado University on Friday at 5:30 p.m., followed by a matchup with Colorado Mesa University on Saturday.
