Women’s Tennis Plays Tough Against Division I Lopes

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University women’s tennis team battled Division I Grand Canyon University Monday in the spring opener as the Lady Lopes claimed a 7-0 victory Monday.

In front of a solid crowd at the WNMU tennis courts, the Lady Mustangs came close to claiming a couple of matches.

In doubles, GannaTiurina/Annica Betz (Celle, Germany/Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria Gymnasium) were within a few points from taking their top flight match before falling, 7-5. At the No. 3 slot, Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio )/Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) posted three games before falling, 6-3. At No. 2, Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad)/Pauline Emin (Viry, France/Lycee Arbez Carme) fell, 6-1.

In singles, Tiurina went toe-to-toe at her No. 1 match as she came back from a 2-6 first set loss to dominate the second set, 6-2. With the match already decided, the two played a super tiebreaker and Tiurina claimed two points before a 10-2 loss. Emin won five games at No. 3 falling, 6-3, 6-2. Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) at No. 4 and Morrill at No. 6 each claimed four games. Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) won two in each set but fell, 6-2, 6-2. Morrill came back from a 6-1 first set setback to win three in the second set, 6-3. Betz fell at No. 2, 6-0, 6-1 and Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) at No. 5 fell, 6-1, 6-0.

WNMU will turn around and host Eastern Arizona this Wednesday at 1 p.m.
