State Declares WNMU Applied Liberal Arts and Sciences College of New Mexico

Santa Fe, NM- On Wednesday, April 5, 2017, the State of New Mexico officially passed the bill declaring Western New Mexico University as the public Applied Liberal Arts and Sciences college of New Mexico. Much like how New Mexico Tech is the state designated school for studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Western New Mexico University is now the designated institute for students interested in studying English, History, Social Sciences, Spanish, Communications and Philosophy.

In an interview conducted last year with Dr. Jack Crocker, the WNMU Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, he stated that the key difference between a human being and a machine is their thinking and reasoning abilities. The Applied Liberal Arts and Sciences is designed to teach students valuable skills in critical thinking, communication, and problem solving that will benefit them upon entering the working world. The goal for the Applied Liberal Arts and Sciences initiative isn’t just to teach students history, literature and philosophy, but how to put the knowledge to use in a practical, professional capacity.

The Applied Liberal Arts and Sciences initiative will continue to the shape the University in the years to come. A more thorough article on the program can be found here.
