Silver City, NM- It takes a special type of student to sit down and help their classmates every now and then. However it takes a special type of person to be willing to put so much extra time and effort into helping their classmates learn. That person can be found in WNMU student Tim Stillman. Though Tim is currently double majoring in Entrepreneurship and Business Management, his knowledge far exceeds the borders of business.
“I will either learn the material to teach my classmates or send them to someone who already knows the material if time we’re pressed for time.” Tim said.
Not that there’s much more for him to learn. Besides having a strong knowledge in fields such as Economics Accounting and Finance, Tim is also well studied in both Chemistry and Art. When he doesn’t know something, he usually knows someone who does. He often turns to one of his many friends or sometimes goes so far as to ask an instructor to sit in on a study group. Tim is always willing to lend a helping hand, no matter the time or place. No one can better testify to this than Anna Flores, one of Tim’s many classmates.
“I had the stomach flu and really needed help with my assignments. Tim and I emailed and texted all weekend and he got me through my assignments,” Anna said. “I don’t know what I would have done without him.”
This comes in addition to several study groups a week and multiple individual tutoring sessions. The time needed to hold these groups’ pales in comparison to the effort Tim is willing to put into every session. Putting together Power Points with definitions and sample test questions has helped many students to not just earn passing grades but to also understand the material. The big question you could ask Tim is why put in all the extra time and effort? His response may surprise you.
“Seeing other people happy and helping them strive makes me happy.” Tim said, humbly. “Through personal experience I found that true happiness comes from genuinely helping others without the expectation of getting anything in return. Knowing that I can make a difference in somebody’s life is what makes me happy.”
Not every student needs to be in a club or organization to have an impact on campus or the student body. This is something that Tim knows and lives by every day. The best description of Tim Stillman comes from his friend and classmate Jaselynn Emery.
“Tim is a person you want in your class.” Jaselynn said, “He’s a person you want to talk too and a person you want to know. It is easy to [be] friends with Tim.”
