WNMU Softball Opens 2017 Season Next Friday

Silver City, N.M. – The Lady Mustangs open up their season on February 3rd as they travel to Las Vegas, Nevada to square off against Humboldt State University with the game beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Last season, the Lady Mustang finished with an overall record of 21-34. In the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, WNMU landed in ninth place with a 17-23 conference record. For the beginning of the 2017 season, Western will have their hands full as they open up with a five-game tourney on Feb. 3 in Las Vegas, Nevada. A double-header awaits two days later on Feb. 7 as they face Hawaii of Hilo. Another tournament comes on Feb. 9 in Utah, which will be a series of six games. The Mustangs then return home to open conference play on Feb. 17 against in-state rivals, Eastern New Mexico University. The remainder of the season will consist of Lone Star Conference opponents, except for Embry Riddle University. When beginning the conference season,
WNMU will have 17 home games and 20 away games.

After graduating five seniors following the 2016 season, WNMU Head Coach Angela Corliss had an active offseason as she added nine new recruits to the roster. Five of the nine are freshman; Lyana Waddell, Alicia Habitzruether, Thalia O’Neill, Justyce Millan-Martinez and Asia Morales. The other four is one sophomore, Julia Bueno, and three juniors; Valeria Luna, Victoria Arganda and Aryana Gutierrez.

Returning Mustangs are seniors Linzy Granger, Lacy Granger and Domi Shone; junior Mariangela Garcia; and sophomores Bailey McFarland, Clarissa Moreno, Ariana Maldonado, Yasmeen Gastelum, Brooklyn Misenhimer, Carolyn Castillo, Deidre Vega and Tiana Salazar.

Coach Corliss, who is entering her sixth season as head coach at Western, also managed to bring in a new assistant manager, Elsa Cocker. Coach Cocker is a Hawaii native and previously held an assistant coaching job for Trinity Valley Community College (Athens, Texas) from 2014 to 2016. Before arriving to TVCC, Coach Cocker spent time as a student assistant for Angelo State University.

February 3rd is opening day for the Western New Mexico University softball team as they hope to make a run in this year’s 2017 season.
